The article studies John Gay's poem "Trivia, or The Art of Walking through the City of London", with special regard to the social and ethic characteristics of its narrator-walker. The article shows that the city walker envisaged by Gay is the first example of the metropolitan flâneur as described by Baudelaire and analyzed by Walter Benjamin. Yet Gay is not able to tackle the socio-economic issues of the metropolis, such as the interplay between luxury and welfare, and ultimately evades them.

Abstract
