Translation of English literature into Italian often misrepresents the discourse features that are signalled through displacements and prosodic markedness. This paper examines the syntax, semantics and the prosodic cues signalling topics and foci in the first two volumes of the successfull saga of Henry Potter, showing that its Italian translation, probably very influential as a model of narrative text for Italian young readers, suffers a number of flaws that can only be interpreted as the result of attrition caused by the contact with the language of the original text.

Abstract

Translation of English literature into Italian often misrepresents the discourse features that are signalled through displacements and prosodic markedness. This paper examines the syntax, semantics and the prosodic cues signalling topics and foci in the first two volumes of the successfull saga of Henry Potter, showing that its Italian translation, probably very influential as a model of narrative text for Italian young readers, suffers a number of flaws that can only be interpreted as the result of attrition caused by the contact with the language of the original text.
