In this century historians have shown a new interest for the Ottoman Empire, due to political and cultural reasons: i.e. the politics of AKP in Turkey and the development of the world/global/connected history and the area/trans-cultural studies. Since the beginning of the 19th c. and Joseph von Hammer-Purgstall's work, the documents and manuscripts kept in the Italian libraries and archives have always had an important place in writing the history of this empire. This paper stresses the changes that have taken place in the field of Ottoman historiography in the last two centuries, pointing out the new Italian historiography about the sultans' empire.
