How do literary texts affect a reader's sensitivity? Taking her cue to the poor consideration given to such dimension by those literary theories, regardig reading as exchange between the text and the reader, the author thinks that some answers to such questions may be found in a pragmatist perspective, especially in John Dewey's and George Herbert Mead's reflextions on experience, language and sensitivity. A non dogmatic distinction between immediate, qualitative or aestethic experience and reflexive, analytical and mediated experience in viewing the reading of literary texts as teetering between such two forms of experience is borrowed from the former. Mead's theory of the affective origins of language as a conversation of gestures is extended to the reading experience as an exchange of literary gestures. Abstract

In addition, this papers claims that the pragmatists' interpretation of emotional interactions can shed light on the powerful aesthetic, sensitive or qualitative value of reading, without slipping into the theoretical quagmires of subjectisim and mentalism.
