Cidadãos de direito, estrangeiros de fato: narrativas de ítalo-brasileiros(as) na Itália

In this beginning of the 21st century, thousands of immigrants’ descendants who came to Brazil at the end of the 19th century lived the experience of migrating to Europe. This process is experienced and told, many times, as a “return” to the land of their nonnos and nonnas; at the same time, it is a possibility to go out into the world, cross borders and live abroad. The data were collected from oral reports and ethnographic research conducted in Italy in 2012 and 2014. These immigrants have the Italian citizenship recognized by the Italian government and are categorized as Italians living abroad (all’estero) – IRE, what enables them to be part of the Italian (and European) community. Men and women who emigrated to work/study tell about the confrontation between the de jure citizenship and the routine of prejudice and discrimination that they have to deal with in Italy.
