This article investigates different aspects concernng the mysterious figure of al-Khidr, mentioned but not named n the Qur'an as the mysterious guide of the prophet Moses. The symbolismconcernng this figure revolves around the presence of water and hence characterizes numerous holy places all over the Muslim world, where the presence of this spiriutal guide is perceived as assisting those in search of guidance in crossing from on shore to the other.
