This paper examines the self–representation account of the Karians of Milasa, which is reported by Her. I 171–174, with a particular focus on the ethnic and identitary role played by the sanctuary of Zeus Karios. Particular attention is paid to two dynamics that would distinguish this sanctuary: the admission of Lydians and Mysians and the exclusion of the so called “homoglossoi”. These dynamics are read through an ethnicistic perspective, that is arguing an implied phenomenon of deconstruction and reconstruction of ethnic identity.
