Abstract

This paper explores change in official institutions orienting China’s socio-ecological relations in the Anthropocene epoch. China’s socio-ecological institutions have been shaped by goals of ever-increasing material progress, a core aspect of China’s modernization throughout the XX century. The extractive relationship with nature has been reinforced by the normative emphasis on weak sustainability. China’s recent transition towards a more balanced approach to development should be understood within a wider institutional context, placing humans and technology at the apex of the ecological system.
