Studies in wakan hikaku bungaku (Sino-Japanese comparative literature) have grown considerably in Japan during the last 50 years, but among scholars of different fields there is still a lack of convinction about the need for in- cluding this kind of comparative approach in studies of Heian literature. The relationship between Sugawara no Michizane’s kanshi and Kokin wakashū’s waka demonstrates that poetry in Chinese was not separated from the world of waka. The two literary traditions were deeply entwined in every aspect, both textual and social. In this paper I focus on the problem of intertextuality and the passage of rhetoric from kanshi to waka and vice versa, to demon- strate the necessity for a different and dual point of view.
