Mount Fuji is the most representative scenery of Japan, and has been considered an evaluable “heritage” long before its inscription in the UNESCO register. Why the Japanese developed such a strong emotional attachment for this mountain? In this article I will analyze how the production of waka poetry is connected with processes of “heritagization” of mount Fuji.I argue that waka about the Fuji are a kind “symbolic appropriation” of the image of the mountain, and I attempt a rethinking of the concept of ownership of heritage, and I suggest a new point of view about the relationship between tangible and intangible.

Abstract

Mount Fuji is the most representative scenery of Japan, and has been considered an evaluable “heritage” long before its inscription in the UNESCO register. Why the Japanese developed such a strong emotional attachment for this mountain? In this article I will analyze how the production of waka poetry is connected with processes of “heritagization” of mount Fuji.I argue that waka about the Fuji are a kind “symbolic appropriation” of the image of the mountain, and I attempt a rethinking of the concept of ownership of heritage, and I suggest a new point of view about the relationship between tangible and intangible.
