The importance of the invention of telescope cannot be underestimated, neither regarding its instrumental value within the astronomic field during the “Scientific Revolution” (and uninterruptedly after) nor regarding its philosophical and symbolical significance in so far as it was a device – the first with such an impact on human knowledge – that was given credit for, and recognized as, being able of increasing natural perceptual capacity (i.e., sight), well beyond its contingent limits, even enhancing it to a level of improvement that was thought as impossible to reach.

Abstract

The importance of the invention of telescope cannot be underestimated, neither regarding its instrumental value within the astronomic field during the “Scientific Revolution” (and uninterruptedly after) nor regarding its philosophical and symbolical significance in so far as it was a device – the first with such an impact on human knowledge – that was given credit for, and recognized as, being able of increasing natural perceptual capacity (i.e., sight), well beyond its contingent limits, even enhancing it to a level of improvement that was thought as impossible to reach.
