Abstract

The essay shows how the pre-Roman coinages of Northern Italy, originated as an answer to local needs, have been influenced in a determinant way by Rome’s action. First the conflict between Romans and Gauls caused a dramatic increase in coin production, later, after the conquest of Cisalpine, local coinages continued, but their development depended strictly on Romanisation processes, although Rome never intervened in local monetary matters.
