The essay deals with the origin as utopia. Through the analysis of a case study (Guests, K. Wodiczko 2009), the origin is presented as an unachievable goal and unreachable destination. Being a residual entity, the origin is represented by means of a number of dichotomies: presence/absence, visible/invisible, identity/alterity, which are rendered through the image of immigrants. Those figures are guests since they embody the concept of displacement, emphasising the connection between origin and identity.

Abstract

The essay deals with the origin as utopia. Through the analysis of a case study (Guests, K. Wodiczko 2009), the origin is presented as an unachievable goal and unreachable destination. Being a residual entity, the origin is represented by means of a number of dichotomies: presence/absence, visible/invisible, identity/alterity, which are rendered through the image of immigrants. Those figures are guests since they embody the concept of displacement, emphasising the connection between origin and identity.
