Pier Paolo Pasolini has been one of the first writers to feel immediately the importance of Cavafy's poetry and also to try styling himself on it. After reading the first Italian anthology of the modern Greek poet, which had been published by Filippo Maria Pontani in the literary review "Poesia" (May 1945), Pasolini centred his first novel, "Amado mio" (1947-1950), on the summer love between a young man of letters named Desire and a teen of divine beauty nicknamed Iasis, like the addressee of a famous epigram by Cavafy. The monograph tries to reconstruct in detail this unknown chapter of Cavafy's reception, primarily considering the first draft of the novel ("One of Their Gods", 1947-1948).
