The article is part of the results of the international ARCANE project, devoted to the synchronisation of Early Bronze Age chronologies in the Ancient Near East and in the Eastern Mediterranean. It analyses ceramic developments in Upper Mesopotamia at the beginning of the Early Bronze Age in an intrerregional perspective, with a special focus on: 1) the persistence and progressive transformation of Uruk types in the different regions after the end of the Uruk period, 2) the re-appearance of painted decoration and its meaning, and 3) the international connections of the Ninevite 5 ceramic culture.
