Proliferation of references to foreign musicians in Venice is hardly favoured by the tendentially impersonal content of the documentation produced by the highly-structured republican administration, nor by what was probably the deliberate elimination of non-essential materials to make room for new generations of paper-work. At the same time, the corporate organization of music-making in Venice was designed to secure an equitable division of labour among local musicians and limit the participation of outsiders in institutional events requiring music. Foreigners appear to be more welcome in Venice as music-lovers – consumers – than as music-makers. Abstract

This theme is illustrated with reference to Vincenzo Coronelli’s Guida de’ forestieri per succintamente osservare tutto il più riguardevole nella città di Venetia of 1697 which, beginning with the edition of 1700, was published together with the same author’s Protogiornale veneto perpetuo sacro-profano.
