The study of language has always been at the centre of Édouard Glissant’s work: from the ‘manque’ of languages that characterizes Le Discours antillais (1981) to multilingualism first explored in Introduction à une poétique du Divers (1995), from the prolific encounter between French and Creole ‒subverting French language ‒ to the ‘surabondance chaotique’ of Tout-monde (1993). An analysis of the evolution of Glissant’s thought on the concept of language allows us to trace the emergence of a new role for language in the construction of Glissant’s ‘Tout-monde’.

Abstract

The study of language has always been at the centre of Édouard Glissant’s work: from the ‘manque’ of languages that characterizes Le Discours antillais (1981) to multilingualism first explored in Introduction à une poétique du Divers (1995), from the prolific encounter between French and Creole ‒subverting French language ‒ to the ‘surabondance chaotique’ of Tout-monde (1993). An analysis of the evolution of Glissant’s thought on the concept of language allows us to trace the emergence of a new role for language in the construction of Glissant’s ‘Tout-monde’.
