Arabic Grammar Materials: Description and Analysis

This chapter reviews the current situation of Arabic grammar materials for the teaching and learning of Arabic grammar, including the electronic delivery of materials. It examines a selected group of textbooks and takes a critical stance by comparing between them in terms of proficiency goals, authenticity of texts and exercises, target skills and activities designed for realizing these goals, and relevant grammatical structures. The selection is based on a survey of Arabic language materials covering fuṣḥā, regional colloquial varieties, and the integrated approach of both fuṣḥā and a regional colloquial variety. Finally, it attempts to explain why the Arabic language materials are grammar-based.
