In this paper, I offer the first comparative analysis of the two Mòcheno translations of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, transmitted in two anonymous manuscripts (ms. 2874, Biblioteca Comunale di Trento; ms Montbret 489, ff 71-72, Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen), showing that they i) are reliable sources of linguistic data, ii) document an ancient phase of the language fully coherent with the present-day situation, and ii) the texts are very likely to have been transcribed (but not translated) by Francesco Tecini.

Abstract

In this paper, I offer the first comparative analysis of the two Mòcheno translations of the Parable of the Prodigal Son, transmitted in two anonymous manuscripts (ms. 2874, Biblioteca Comunale di Trento; ms Montbret 489, ff 71-72, Bibliothèque municipale de Rouen), showing that they i) are reliable sources of linguistic data, ii) document an ancient phase of the language fully coherent with the present-day situation, and ii) the texts are very likely to have been transcribed (but not translated) by Francesco Tecini.
