Alcune riflessioni su commercio e produzione di vino ad Aquileia

Aquileia, Roman colony founded in 181 BC is mentioned in literary sources in relation with both wine trade and production. Strabo writing at the time of the emperor Augustus refers that at Aquileia they used to stock up goods arriving from the sea, including wine. A few centuries later, Herodian refers that Aquileia used to export wine produced in its rich hinterland. Moving beyond literary evidence, the paper will offer an updated, diachronic, overview of the role of the North Adriatic emporium of Aquileia in patterns of wine trade/redistribution, based on published and unpublished ceramological evidence. Patterns of wine amphorae circulation allow us to draw a complex picture of wine importation and redistribution (as exemplified by data analysis). However, these data can now be integrated with evidence for local vine cultivation, and possibly wine production given by archaeobotanical - archaeopalynological analysis, epigraphic and ceramological evidence.
