Abstract

Marine and underwater technologies (sonar, ROVs, photogrammetry, etc.) offer many opportunities for deep water exploration of our cultural heritage and are a great opportunity to go beyond the submerged environments’ limits, such as depth, visibility, and time restrictions. In general, this kind of research is possible thanks to the collaboration of specialized private companies, trusts or other better-equipped and resource-rich institutions. The paper presents the recent activities carried out in the Tyrrhenian Sea by a collaboration between Ca’ Foscari University of Venice and Fondazione Azionemare; the characteristics and the potentialities of deep contexts with an excellent level of conservation have been analysed through a study of Roman shipwrecks with marble and tiles cargoes.
