The present work consists in a historical analysis of the British campaign in Orissa (the Meriah Wars, 1836 - 1862)) for the suppression of human sacrifice and female infanticide among the Khonds. By reconstructing the military operations in the inner jungly districts and the consecutive rebellions of Khond tribes, I shall outline the actual reason for a British presence in Orissa. Uprooting the custom of human sacrifice and civilizing Khond tribes has been a formal pretext to impose the British rule in the systematic process of the colonization of India. The study consists in a comparison between the British military report of the 19th century and personal data collected on field work in Orissa.
