The article provides a detailed analysis of the corpus of capitals preserved in the basilica of Santa Maria Assunta in Torcello (Venice), 18 in the nave and 4 in the portico. Almost all capitals are made of Proconnesian marble and include both Byzantine spolia and finely carved Medieval pieces. The article starts with the typological and stylistic analysis of the corpus followed by a discussion on local stonemason workshops during the Middle Ages. Finally, a complete catalogue of the 22 pieces is provided in the appendix.
