This article offers an analysis of the travel in a selection of picaresque novels, focusing briefly on four specific aspects: the motivations for the travels, different to mere drifting; the preference for the urban environment and the descriptions of cities and people, both in Spain and in Europe; the particular case of Estebanillo, whose adventures exceed all preceding tales and bring together history and fiction; and finally the voyage to the New World, the dreamed port of wealth and social promotion, which appears in picaresque texts less than could be expected.
