In this paper, we elaborate a classification of weil-clauses and show that it can be used for teach- ing German as a foreign language. In order to elaborate the classification, two theoretical ap- proaches are compared and combined: the three-dimensional model proposed by Sweetser, and the theoretical framework conceived by Prandi/Gross/De Santis, the last of which involves the distinction between cause and motive. The classification can be used as a grid for the analysis of weil-clauses and must be understood as a tool for corpus-based teaching activities. In the end, transformations based on structural phraseologisms are introduced to highlight the final inter- pretation of the weil-clauses.
